Curcumin and Alzheimer’s

Curcumin and vitamin D, both individually and together, appear to have properties that help protect against Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles and Riverside, along with colleagues at the Human Bio Molecular Research Institute account that vitamin D-3 (the type made in the skin) together with natural or synthetic curcumin may stimulate the immune system to eradicate amyloid-beta from the brain. Amyloid-beta is a protein that collects in nerve cells (neurons) in the brain and forms the plaques that are considered to play an important role in Alzheimer’s disease.

The investigators found that synthetic curcumin improved the binding of amyloid-beta to macrophages. Macrophages are cells that act as “trash collectors” for the immune system by travelling all the way through the brain and body and picking up waste products, including amyloid-beta. Vitamin D worked along with curcumin and stimulated the absorption of amyloid-beta in macrophages in most of the patients.

There are two types of patients with Alzheimer’s disease: those who respond positively to curcumin and those who do not. Since curcumin and vitamin D work differently with amyloid-beta and the immune system, the researchers note that, depending on the patient, taking both curcumin and vitamin D, or taking one of them alone, may be more effective, depending on the individual patient. Consequently, at this time they are not recommending any specific dosage of curcumin or vitamin D for people who have Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers are, however, planning more, larger studies of curcumin and vitamin D in Alzheimer’s patients. For those who are taking into consideration taking curcumin and/or vitamin D, consult your health-care professional. Curcumin has been taken safely in doses up to 10 grams daily. Vitamin D supplements typically are 400 to 1,000 IU daily.

There is considerable in-vitro data demonstrating that curcumin has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-amyloid activity. In addition, studies in animal models of Alzheimer's disease indicate a direct effect of curcumin in decreasing the amyloid pathology of Alzheimer's disease. As the prevalent use of curcumin as a food additive and relatively small short-term studies in humans suggest safety, curcumin is a capable agent in the treatment and/or prevention of Alzheimer's disease. Nonetheless, important information regarding curcumin bioavailability, safety and tolerability, particularly in an elderly population is lacking
