Curcumin for Brain

Clinical trials in humans indicate that the systemic bioavailability of orally administered curcumin is relatively low and that mostly metabolites of curcumin, instead of curcumin itself, are detected in plasma or serum following oral consumption. In the intestine and liver, curcumin is readily conjugated to form curcumin glucuronides and curcumin sulfates or, alternately, reduced to hexahydrocurcumin. Curcumin metabolites may not have the same biological activity as the parent compound. In one study, conjugated or reduced metabolites of curcumin were less effective inhibitors of inflammatory enzyme expression in cultured human colon cells than curcumin itself.

Glutathione is an imperative intracellular antioxidant that plays a crucial role in cellular adaptation to stress. Stress-related increases in cellular glutathione levels result from increased expression of glutamate cysteine ligase (GCL), the rate-limiting enzyme in glutathione synthesis. Studies in cell culture suggest that curcumin can increase cellular glutathione levels by enhancing the transcription of genes that encode GCL.

This impressive effect and its mental benefits have been well documented in animal models, but it will be several more years before the more definitive long-term human studies are completed and its use can and very likely will be recommended to the general public. Fortunately, hundreds of millions of Asian Indians eat it daily, and once you understand its benefits, you can too.

Amyloid build-up is a degenerative process that affects all of us, without exception as we age, steadily gunning up our brains with protein deposits and decreasing our brain's memory and learning abilities. It is one of those things we all die "with," and an unlucky few of us die "of." Fortunately, because we all have "cognitive reserve" (redundant ways to learn everything important that we do), this steady loss of our brain's function isn't necessarily noticeable to others around us, but it means our minds have to work harder and harder and harder over time to do things that were previously easy. If we pay attention (many of us don't, perhaps because it is an unpleasant realization), almost all of us will typically begin to notice creeping recall, learning, and awareness ("brain fog") issues beginning in our 30's (or even late 20's for some) and steadily becoming worse with advancing years. Eventually, with enough damage, even your reserve capacity begins to fail and significantly reduced mental ability, forgetfulness, and in your later years.

Recent studies show that stress-induced damage to hippocampal neurons may be the reason behind depression. Reductions in neurogenesis in the hippocampus and concentrations of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) generally result in stress, anxiety and depression. There are, however, a few ways to increase neurogenesis. These include high impact exercise, learning, bright light, and the use of antidepressants. Curcumin also positively affects neurogenesis. The effect of Curcumin on neurogenesis was similar to the impact of exercise and environmental enhancement.

Another way that Curcumin battles depression is by increasing the level of dopamine in the brain. But this effect was observed only when the Curcumin dosage was increased. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that affects important brain processes that control movement and emotional responses. Recently, dopamine has become the target of many antidepressant drugs. These drugs are further found to be more effective in the presence of Curcumin.
